SPECIAL SESSIONS to be covered include:
SPEAKER Tamara Tulloch – with an overview of Actsafe’s programs and services that can support you in reducing workplace risks and making BC the safest jurisdiction in the world for the arts and entertainment industries! This session will explore the fundamentals of psychological health, safety, and wellness resources that were developed by Actsafe and the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). The organizations partnered on the People Working Well (PWW) initiative where a group of industry experts joined a technical advisory group to customize resources that are specific to BC’s arts and entertainment industries. This working group developed webinars, courses, safety videos, and reference guides that provide practical tools to support employers and workers in creating psychologically safe film productions — focusing on topics such as respectful workplaces, developing supportive leaders, asking for help, and increasing psychological literacy.
Resources will be available on-site for participants to utilize to access these resources on an ongoing basis and there will be a 30min Q&A – bring your burning Actsafe questions!!!

SPEAKER Nicolle Nattrass – Will be speaking on Mental Wellbeing & Psychological Safety in Creative Industries. Discover stress-reducing tools, explore emerging support roles and resources in creative industries, and share space with peers passionate about a safer, healthier industry. Nicolle’s work is grounded in training as an Intimacy Director and Mental Health Coordinator who has enjoyed over 20 years as a professional actor (CAEA/UBCP/ACTRA), playwright (PGC) and director. A certified Addiction Counselor CAC II and Registered Therapeutic Counselor RTC, she possesses a deep understanding of the demands and challenges of the industry and the importance of protecting mental wellness along with creative storytelling goals. www.nicollenattrass.com

Professional Development Series

Take 15: Self-Care & Mental Wellbeing for Cast & Crew

Why mental wellbeing belongs in every rehearsal room

Theatre asks a lot of us.

Whether you’re stepping into a role, running tech, calling cues, stage managing, producing, or supporting the work behind the scenes, creative spaces can be exhilarating — and demanding. Long hours, emotional intensity, deadlines, performance pressure, uncertainty, and constant problem-solving are often part of the process.

We spend so much time preparing for the work that we don’t always prepare for the impact the work can have on us.

That’s why I’m excited to be leading Take 15: Self-Care & Mental Wellbeing for Cast & Crew, part of the Professional Development Series with Artists’ Collective Theatre.

This one-hour workshop is designed for performers, crew, creatives, and arts workers of all ages and experience levels who want practical tools to support their mental wellbeing in rehearsal, tech, production, and beyond.

Why this workshop matters

The performing arts can ask us to be deeply vulnerable. We often work in high-pressure environments, navigate emotionally charged material, and give enormous amounts of energy to the creative process. While passion fuels our work, resilience sustains it.

Mental wellbeing in the arts is not about avoiding stress completely. It’s about learning how to:

  • Recognize when stress is building
  • Regulate emotions during intense creative periods
  • Maintain healthy boundaries while staying connected to the work
  • Support ourselves and each other in collaborative spaces
  • Build sustainable habits that help prevent burnout

Creating psychologically safer rehearsal and production environments benefits everyone — cast, crew, directors, designers, stage managers, and audiences alike.

What we’ll explore together

In this workshop, I’ll share five practical self-care tools that can be used immediately in rehearsal rooms, backstage, during tech week, or in everyday life.

We’ll explore ways to:

✔ Build resilience during demanding creative periods
✔ Regulate stress and anxiety in practical, manageable ways
✔ Increase awareness of psychological safety in artistic spaces
✔ Recognize signs of overwhelm before burnout happens
✔ Develop simple strategies that support focus, grounding, and wellbeing

This is not therapy. It’s practical, accessible, skills-based support grounded in real-world experience working with artists and creative communities.

Who is this for?

Everyone in the creative process.

Actors, stage managers, technicians, directors, producers, designers, crew, students, emerging artists, seasoned professionals — if you work in performance or creative environments, this workshop is for you.

No previous experience or mental health background is needed.

I believe caring for ourselves is part of caring for the work. When artists and crews have practical tools to support their wellbeing, creative spaces become stronger, safer, and more sustainable.

I hope you’ll join me for this important conversation.
