Mental Health Coordinators play an essential part in many industries…so while they are not a new thing- they are still a new role in the Arts & Performing Arts Industry (Theatre/Film/TV)
We know that Mental Wellbeing & Psychological Safety in the workplace is essential.
We also know that the performing arts industry faces tight schedules, budgets and more often than not, faces portrayal of heightened, intense and sensitive scenes that not only affect audiences but also impact the crew and the cast during rehearsal, tech, performance and in some cases, for a considerable amount of time after the production is over.
The body is processing the story and as we now know, the body doesn’t differentiate between reality or pretend. So what happens when the story were telling touches on or provokes something deeper or traumatic, in the cast and crew and audience?
We are learning so much now about Trauma. We know that Trauma lives in the body, it is not just a memory. Trauma can reveal itself as anxiety, intensity, stress, fight/flight/freeze/fawn response. This kind of tension can greatly impact productions.
Having a Mental Health Coordinator to manage and identify stress points or challenges before they lead to problems, saves time (money and resources), offer strategies to manage stress, provide mental health first aid, provide immediate care with accessible tools and risk assessment for cast, crew and audience.
We know that a healthy supported- artistic and technical team are able to deliver their best work, are less prone to burn-out and therefore are able to focus more on collaborative, compelling and creative choices in their storytelling.
Mental Health Coordinators share resources, strategies and tools to manage mental wellness for all.
